Heart break. Rookie J.R Hildebrand did the unthinkable this past Memorial Day weekend. Hildebrand was leading the biggest race in the world on the final lap with a large lead over second place. All looked well for the rookie until he came out of turn 4 too high and hit the wall.
Second place car Dan Wheldon past J.R at the line to win his second 500. The rookie slid his car against the wall and across the finish line for a second place finish. The race car destroyed and the driver in disbelief.
What happend? Did Hildebrand’s team not tell him that he had a big lead and he could take it easy? Did the young rookie just get jittery and lose control? Either way, Hildebrand is no doubt going to be a star in motorsports whether its at Indy or F1. But that one’s gonna hurt. Reports always say “we always forget who finished in second place.” But I think this time everyone will remember this second place finish.
Memorial Day weekend brought on a whole lot of great racing on 4 wheels. We plan to get back to motocross racing, off-road and dirt bike gear real soon.
Team KTM had as many as 4 riders participate in main events of the 2011 Supercross season. Andrew Short had the best showing of the group in the points finishing 6th. Mike Alessi won many hole shot awards throughout the season. Ken Roczen also had some good runs in Supercross when not ruinning the Lites class.
With Roger DeCoster at the helm of the KTM ship, results are expected to be great very soon. The KTM 350 has been the center of much development this season. Soon KTM will tune their results to match their effort. Look for the KTM motocross gear at the front of the field this season.
Kimi Rakkonen will make his NASCAR debut in the Camping World Truck Series this month in Charlotte. Rakkonen who currently competes in the WRC , will drive a Kyle Busch prepared NASCAR truck.
Rumors say that Rakkonen will get adjusted to NASCAR style racing in the truck series for his move to the Sprint Cup Series in 2012. Red Bull Racing’s NASCAR team will have an open seat in 2012 as current driver Kasey Kahne will move over to Hendrick at season’s end. Although nothing has been confirmed by Red Bull as to who will drive in 2012, rumors say it will be Kimi.
For the remainder of the 2011 season Rakkonen will split time between his WRC team and Kyle Busch’s truck team. Quite a contrast for Rakkonen as he jumps from his off road helmet to his NASCAR digs through the rest of the year.
James Stewart was the fastest rider on the track most weekends of the 2011 Supercross season. Stewart could have slowed down and still won.
However, Stewart never gives less than 110%. He may have given up the championship by not riding smart. Stewart’s win/crash rate is pretty high. Rarely do we see him take just a podium. All or nothing, is the way he rides.
The motorsports world has to give due respect to Stewart and his attitude toward racing. With the 2011 Outdoor Motocross season just around the corner, I hope to see the James Stewart Dirt Bike Gear on the track and up front once again.
Although we haven’t been riding together for very long, me and my family have all chosen the same off road riding glove. The Axo Series 19 glove just seems to be the best for what we do.
As a family, we bought into off road riding just 2 years ago. My 2 boys and wife enjoy quads and I enjoy my motocross bike. Finally, we also have a side-by-side when we don’t want to push too hard.
No matter what we ride, we all have the same motocross glove. The comfort and low maintenance is unmatched. Check these motocross gloves out here or at you local moto shop. Try them for yourself if you dont believe me.
After a little over 2 weeks of technical difficulties we are back and ready to share more information on everything motorsports. In 2 weeks time a lot has happened in motorsports.
Ryan Villopoto has become the 2011 Supercross Champion. Not only Champion, but champion of the most competitive season ever.
The month of May brings us to the start of the outdoor motocross season, the Indy500, Coke 600, and the Monaco F1 race. Can’t wait to see Indy 500 ”bump day,” qualifying. There will actually be some cars to bump this year.
May also brings the start of the California Summer of Motorsports. For those of you lucky enough to live in or near California, you will get to see the best motorsports series in the world in a span of 3 months. NASCAR, Grand AM, Lucas Oil Outdoor Motocross, IRL, and of course, X Games.
Put your motocross gloves and hold on for a great summer of motorsports.
