Its Time for Bristol!

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series will head to Bristol, Tennessee this weekend for the concrete high banks. Bristol Tennessee is home to the World’s Fastest Half-Mile race track and some of the most exciting racing you will ever see.

There have been some truly great finishes over the years. In 1999 at the Bristol Night Race Dale Earnhardt took out Terry Labonte on the last lap to win the race. Some fans booed, some fans cheered, but all of them saw an awesome race.

The tight quarters of the Bristol Motor Speedway make for lots of bumping and banging. Tempers begin to flare as the race wares on. Of course, at the end of the race its time to go, and the front bumper can be a key to winning.

Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, and Kevin Harvick are all top contenders in this year’s Cup event. Look for 500 laps of pure hard core racing this Saturday Night. If you never watch a NASCAR race watch on Friday and Saturday night and learn a new respect for the sport.

Also on Saturday Night the dirt bike gear of the AMA Supercross Series will be in Jacksonville Florida. Try to keep up with both. We will be trying the same.

Supercross at Indy

Villopoto holds a strong lead in the AMA Supercross point series. This is a week for Stewart and Reed to make a charge at the lead. As strong as Villopoto has been, Stewart and Reed need to beat him starting this week to keep their hope alive for the series championship.

It is no doubt that Stewart has the edge in speed most weeks. If Stewart can just ride clean this weekend, he will be a serious threat to Villopoto’s lead.

The most disappointing of the motocross jerseys in the championship fight is Ryan Dungey. No wins so far. Within striking distance of the championship but no real sign of greatness. Its time to worry in the Dungey camp.

If Villopoto wins again, its about time to give him the number 1 plate.

Danica Patrick Makes NASCAR History

Since we at Off Road Accessory Review pointed out the uneducated sound of Danica Patrick’s comments during the Daytona Nationwide race we now have to give credit to her improvement. Last weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Danica Patrick finished in 4th place becoming the highest finishing female in a NASCAR race ever. Danica has taken that title from Sara Christian who finished 5th in a Cup race in 1949.

As mentioned before, Danica is a talented racer. Talent will only get a driver so far. A driver needs to apply themselves to a goal 100% in order to continue to improve. There was no evidence of Danica applying  herself at Daytona. Great job Danica. Keep up the good work. Instead of analyzing the level of application of the hottest female driver in the world, we’ll go back to motocross gear and fiber optic helmet mohawks for now!

Trying to Make Racing Exciting

In NASCAR and IRL the management groups are looking for ways to make the racing more exciting. NASCAR has made many moves over the last 3 season to attract more attention. Double file restarts, green/white/checkered finishes, and a new points system are all products of making the races and the season more exciting.

The IRL is looking to add excitement by breaking one of its events into 2. Later this season the Texas event will be run in two 275 kilometer segments. The second segment will start the field at random rather than by qualifying order.

There are a few things that these 2 popular sanctioning bodies can do to improve racing and a few things they cannot. First neither series can shorten their races by too much. Reason being, pit stops and car endurance has a lot to do with these 2 forms of racing. The reason races are 300 to 500 miles is because it a test of equipment and strategy and not just driving skills. Does this make the event a little longer than most people can sit still? Of course it does. Many die hard fans would hate to see 100 lap events. No pit strategy, no major complexion changing opportunities.

What these 2 series can do is through in a shoot out event here and there. As mentioned in a prior blog posting, the British Touring Car Championship features multiple short sprint races in a race weekend. Each event has a winner, and each time the starting field is changed or inverted. NASCAR and IRL could have 3 or 4 of these types of race weekends a year at various tracks that already have exciting racing.

There is no talk at all on how to make motocross and off road racing more exciting. Mainly because of the short race format and the fact that these guys have jumps. So maybe NASCAR can through a jump on the back stretch and shorten the lap count. Not likely. At least we can depend on the guys in the motocross gear to give us plenty of racing excitement every time they hit the track.

The World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series opens its California swing at Chico’s Silver Dollar Speedway this weekend. Track promoters have put together a 2 day show for the fans Friday and Saturday Night.

On Friday the USAC non-wing sprint cars and USAC midgets will be on track. BCRA midget racers will also join the USAC regulars on that night. Friday will only begin the excitement as Saturday the 410 cubic inch sprint car will hit the track for the 2011 Mini Gold Cup. The Mini Gold Cup is the first event in WoO California swing which will go to Hanford, Tulare, Merced, and Calistoga between March 12th and April 2nd. Although there are no jumps on the track and the drivers don’t wear motocross boots, the action is something you have to see to believe!

Supercross Daytona

Supercross Daytona was again one of the most exciting events this season. Calamity in every corner! From Ryan Dungey’s early motor problem, to Stewart’s fall the action seemed to keep on coming.

In the 450 main event Ryan Villopoto took his second Daytona win in commanding fashion. Villopoto also grew his points lead in the 2011 Championship. Chad Reed took a strong second and Ryan Dungey over came early problems to win the LCQ and take third in the main.

The story of the night was the falls. Stewart had a spectacular fall while leading the race by over 6 seconds. Stewart looked disoriented and struggled to get back on the bike. However, Stewart recovered to a 9th place finish. Davi Millsaps ran strong early in the event but fell also taking down Trey Canard with him.

KTM riders showed their progressive improvement at Daytona by having 3 bikes in the top 10. Andrew Short, Ken Roczen, and Mike Alessi all brought their KTM’s back to Roger DeCoster in 4th, 7th, and 10th.

Although Ryan Villopoto is wearing the leading motocross jerseys and extending his point lead, we still can’t hand him the trophy just yet. Stewart showed his desire this weekend and is still in the championship hunt. Chad Reed and his Two Two Motorsports Team seem to be improving each week. Ryan Dungey also came back from adversity and reminds us all that he is still in the game. What a great season so far. Next stop, Indy!

When Your Young Racer Crashes Hard

A child racer can begin their career around age 5. During their first three years a young rider will struggle with finding their limits. Some children ride conservatively the whole time never really pushing their ability. Other children over do the boundary regularly. These children need the best kids motocross gear you can find.

The most daring young riders crash regularly and get up again. At some point the daring rider and the conservative rider will have a hard crash. The crash that shakes their bones much harder then ever before. In some cases the young rider is knocked out for the first time. At this point the rider gets to decide if riding hard is really what he wants to do.

Of course the child will cry. At then end of the weeping session and some comfort from dad, the choice is made. Do you want to keep riding? Or do you want to go home? Can you ride the bike back to the pits or do you want to be carried? These decisions will build the foundation of things to come. Will your child have the strength to ride immediately after a hard fall? Either way encourage their choice, so they understand they have your support either way. If they do get right back on the bike, congratulate them on their accomplishment. They will revisit this decision over and over in their racing career.

Motocross Gloves

One of the most basic items of motocross gear is the motocross glove. On most casual rides I will at minimum wear my motocross gloves and my helmet. I want to let you know about my favorite motocross gloves.

My favorite pair is made by Axo and goes by the name of Series 19. This motocross glove is so comfortable that I can wear a size smaller.  This motocross glove seems to fit the contours of the hand so well that you can hardly tell your wearing them. The grip is great too. If there is one piece of equipment I would recommend you buy, its the Axo Series 19.

James Stewart Crashes Hard

James Stewart who was already trailed Ryan Villopoto in the AMA Supercross points crashed hard tonight in the main event at Daytona. Stewart struggled to get back on the after the crash.

Despite the hard crash Stewart did get back on the bike and passed up to 9th place by the end of the event. Stewart’s motocross boots had a hard test tonight. The effort that Stewart put in after the crash kept him in 2nd place in the points ahead of Reed by 1 and behind Villopoto by 23. This champion showed his desire tonight.

Gordon Scuffles with Conway

Friday evening at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Robby Gordon and Kevin Conway had a physical altercation in the NASCAR garage. Kevin Conway filed a report with the Las Vegas Police Department regarding the altercation.

NASCAR has also put Gordon on probation. The altercation is linked to pending lawsuits that Gordon and Conway have against each other regarding the 2010 NASCAR season. Conway’s sponsor is said to still owe Robby Gorodon Motorsports payment for sponsorship for races that Conway drove the car.

We will update the situation when it is available.
